Details:"Quai de Bercy" According to the graphic works catalogue, Chagall began his cycle on Paris with this large-sized lithograph, which does not show any of the well-known Paris sights, but only one of the many jetties along the river Seine. Why was this place so important for Chagall? The graphic gives the answer: Apparently, this was where he could visualise his nostalgia and longing for his family. The melancholy of his choice of colours and the symbolism of this piece speaks for itself, while the quay becomes a 'secondary battlefield'. And Chagall's characteristic graphic symbols are back: his donkey-like animal, this time winged in order to become airborne. The tree directing him to his roots, and the intimate, and seemingly earnest lovers.
