A seemingly never ending winter allows us to better understand Chagall’s motivation behind this ambivalent work. One part of it is painted in the pale, colourless shades of winter. But the centre of the work is the happy and colourful head of the "Chagall animal" (the small horned donkey). It is accompanied by further symbols from the artist’s characteristic fauna: fish and bird.
