Details:"Quai aux Fleurs" In this limited edition print, Chagall united spatially separated objects in one painting as he often did in his compositions. He changed scales as he deemed appropriate and placed the protagonist’s head backwards onto her body. Everything in this lithograph seems to be floating, even the cathedral (is it Notre Dame?), and the familiar animal Chagall often painted, amplified by the intensive blue of the sky over Paris. The flower-bedecked arm protruding from nowhere, possibly protecting the odd couple, however, remains a secret. In this great graphic, Chagall especially graduated light pastel shades so that they appear to be colourised by hand.
